The air mattresses or more commonly “inflatable mattresses” are practical and comfortable products, useful to those who have frequent guests at home or who enjoy camping holidays while in contact with nature.

The inflatable mattresses are easy to install and don’t clutter once deflated. Also, the affordable price of these products makes the difference; even the more expensive, high-end air mattresses will never reach the cost of a traditional mattress. But how has the use of this product, as an alternative to the mattress, taken place? In 1824 the first air mattress was patented in England; the news was reported with enthusiasm to the press: on the “Gazzetta di Milano” of January 1, 1825, you could read:

“In the Somerset County in England, a craftsman found a way use atmospheric air as a replacement for wool, hair, feathers and down of certain birds of the North, which are all materials with which mattresses are ordinarily filled. The invention consists in making the envelopes of mattresses and pillows impenetrable to air”

Evolution of the product

The principles of air mattress technology haven’t changed that much since 1824, what has changed are the materials used, the construction and inflation methods have also evolved; even if the operating logic has essentially remained the same. That is, a casing that is impermeable to the air that comes inflated with a pump, electric or manual, often included in the price if not actually integrated in the mattress itself. The number of internal air chambers also changes, usually 2 for double sizes and one for the single ones.

Today there are basically two types of inflatable mattresses: air mattresses for domestic use and inflatable camping mattresses. The former usually has a higher thickness and can even be used without a support base (such as slats) and therefore offer a very high ground clearance; they are often equipped with an integrated electric pump to be able to inflate them quickly and effortlessly; the latest and most refined models have a flocked surface with a velvety feeling that helps prevent the sheets from slipping and makes sleep more comfortable.

When talking about camping inflatable mattresses, these have reduced thickness and contained dimensions, they generally have a cheaper price range and are made to take up very little space once deflated. In most cases they inflate thanks to a manual pump included in the price or to be purchased separately.

  1. Comfort

An air mattress will have a difficult time being as comfortable as a foam, latex or traditional spring mattress, but the new generation of air mattresses can be considered normal beds for all intents and purposes; so comfortable that more and more people are adopting them as an everyday solution. In general, the level of comfort offered by a good inflatable mattress will be directly proportional to its thickness. A thicker mattress will usually be more comfortable than a thinner variant, since those who use it will have more air under the surface and throughout night.

One of the most common criticisms of those who have slept on an air mattress is that they felt cold all the time. To overcome this problem there are some small tricks that allow you to retain heat under the blankets. First of all, many models consist of two chambers of air arranged one on top of the other between which a gap is created where it’s possible to tuck in the sheets so they don’t slip out of bed during the night (like the Intex 64490 model you find in our selection).

An interesting novelty: the flocked coating

The flocked coating, a similar material to the velvet, now present on almost all models, has the dual function of holding the sheets and of be much softer and more pleasant to the touch than PVC in case you want use the mattress without any other cover. The high-end and higher-priced models are also sometimes equipped with a memory foam layer (if you would like to read more on the subject), a flexible material that distributes the pressure of the body evenly and which also has the advantage of retaining heat.

Some manufactures that are specialized in inflatable products such as Intex, in order to overcome the problem of temperature maintanence of the mattress, have produced a new line of latest generation mattresses that able to retain body heat during cold nights and to breathe during the summer for a refreshing rest. All of this thanks to a structured microcells surface called ThermaLux™.

A second rather common problem is relating to the support capacity offered to the body. It can happen that during the at night the air mattress could deflate more or less drastically depending on the cause. For example, if pierced, the air leak will be constant, but it can also just happen that the air contained inside cools, progressively decreasing in volume and consequently lowering the pressure on walls; causing a slight sagging of the support. It is also important that the edges of the mattress are reinforced, even better if raised on one side in order to create a higher area for support for the head, ensuring a more homogeneous rest that is similar to that of a traditional mattress.

  2. Size and use case

The new generations who study or work away from home and young couples who are just starting the experience of living together, often decide to live in small apartments or in shared homes that do not offer the necessary space to accommodate visiting relatives and friends with a dedicated guest room. To avoid having to force parents to book and spend money at the hotel or letting friends sleep on the sofa, buying an inflatable mattress can prove to be the economical, ideal solution to the problem.

In this case the main judgment parameter on which this decision is based on is convenience, which plays a fundamental role in the definition of the height of the mattress and the shape. Some models are particularly comfortable and in some cases are equipped with layers of different materials that provide better support to the body e guarantee more restful sleep.

Those who, on the other hand, are used to traveling backpacking and camping, know how important it is to move light. Bringing an air mattress might be considered superfluous, but for some travelers it is an essential element to be able to recover from the fatigue of the journey and start the next day with great energy. In this case, it is capital to pay attention to the space factor, so that the size of the mattress is such that it can easily enter the tent and once deflated is not too heavy in the backpack.

    Pay attention to the weight

Once we have chosen the mattress that is right for us and for the use we have to make of it, we should pay special attention to the weight supported by the product. For best comfort and long term durability, it’s important to never go over the weight limit recommended by the manufacturer; being these mattresses inflated with air, excessive pressure may cause the walls to tear.

This information is generally always indicated on the product data sheet and, even in double models there is a reference to the total supported weight. Typically the maximum sustainable weight from a double air mattress is about 270 kg, while the camping ones have slightly capacity lower of around 200 kg.

  3. Practicality

A final fundamental property to guide us on choosing the right air mattress is its practicality of use and above all the inflation methodology. There are at least three methods for pushing air inside the mattress.

By breath: this system is certainly the most tiring in terms of energy and is a not always recommended as it could involve the risk of headaches. Moreover, inflating the mattress with breath is only possible with very thin models, such as some camping models and floating mats.

Manual Pump: these can be foot operated or hand operated and require a few minutes before the mattress is sufficiently inflated. The system isn’t very convenient, but has the advantage of not to require any power supply; this method is found in models for camping, where you don’t always have electrical sockets available.

Electric pump: these models of mattresses with electric or integrated pump inflate in minutes and require no expenditure of physical energy, but must necessarily be connected to the current. This system is a lot more practical for home models because it allows you to inflate and deflate the mattress in a just a few minutes.
