An ancient tradition that, in silence and only with colours, furnishes and gives character.
The rug is a piece of furniture whose function continues to change over time. Born as a fundamental element of the room, almost a second floor, over time it loses and regains importance. It thus becomes a decoration, structure, bed, sofa. Today, carpets are a sign of an elegant and classy home or studio. An environment that communicates even without speaking.

In modern homes, carpets are often chosen carelessly; as if they were secondary, unimportant elements, they are placed in the cart just to fill it up. Yet, with their textures and colours, they can communicate a lot, as much as a music playlist or a painting.
The history of the carpet is difficult to trace. If we think about the use of animal furs or vegetable mats to soften the floor of a house, tent, cave, then we get lost in the night of the centuries. If, on the other hand, we are talking about wefts knotted according to a design, then it is another matter.

Being woven out of wool and coloured with natural substances, almost nothing has been preserved from antiquity to today. Apart from some very rare specimens left in the steppe ice or in particular conditions, we only have written records: inscriptions, works, stories. Let’s say that we can date the beginning of the history of the carpet around 500 BC, in the steppes of Central Asia. From there, its history moved south (India), east (China) and west (Anatolia and Persia). It was the Persians, over the centuries, and the Turks, who have established themselves as masters of this art. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, they held an almost complete monopoly, which then changed with the advent of the industrial age.
How is a carpet made?
Knotting a carpet is an art that as ancient as it is complex. It is an extraordinary work, handed down over time by artisans and masters. The achievements of the golden age of the Middle Eastern carpet are now on display in museums, as are Renaissance paintings and classical statues. Because they are works of art.
Starting from a weft, the warp threads are knotted around, by hand or with the aid of a loom (today with the help of technology, fortunately); the order of the nodes that create the design ranges from 200 to 500 thousand, based on the prestige of the artefact. The styles of the knot were essentially two, the Turkibaft (Turkish knot) and the Farsibaft (Persian knot). Traditionally for the carpets they used sheep or camel wool yarn, silk, but also gold, silver and precious stones to decorate. Today we have many more materials, which are woven by craftsmen and skilled workers with the help of cutting-edge looms and machinery. The new meets the old, to continue creating works of art.
For the choice of materials, ProduceShop opted for a very soft touch polypropylene fibre. Essentially for the hypoallergenic qualities, resistance and ease of cleaning and maintenance. A choice that over time has proved to be more successful than other fibres, lasting and reliable.
Style
The style of the carpet, and therefore the intersection between shapes, sizes, colours and designs, directly depends on the room in which it will be located. The size, according to custom, should never exceed 2/3 of the floor area; moreover, if placed under a table, it should also be able to fit under chairs. We do not know if this carpet etiquette has a specific origin and must be followed. We are interested that the carpet is first in line with your taste, and so is its arrangement.
As for styles (as a combination of colours and designs), we can identify among the main ones:
- Minimal: single-coloured rugs or rugs with textures reduced to very simple lines, or geometric shapes on the axis
- Open space: intricate geometric textures, vivid and contrasting colours
- Modern: almost surrealist, conceptual, characterized by very pop or very complex designs
- Oriental: the true soul of the Persian carpet; arabesque, floral patterns, sinuous, with historical images, tending to red, gold, natural colours
There is no right or better one. You will be the one to decree it. Above, you can place tables, coffee tables, sofas, armchairs, or a magnificent wooden bookcase to your taste, to give a sense of true sumptuousness. For the moment, we give you some food for thought from our extensive catalogue.
